Cyclops Cave
Spread the word
Cyclops cave or Papa or Brenti or Pausanias is located on Cape Kremmydi. The slit of the cave reaches a depth of 12-14 metres, while it resembles an ancient quarry with stones and numerous impressive stalactites. Crushed clay vessels have been found inside the cave. At its descent, water can be found due to the sea next to it.
The cave's name is connected with the mythical Cyclops that Odysseus met returning from Troy. In fact, on its sidewall, there is the characteristic shape of a face of gigantic dimensions that, perhaps, justifies this name of the cave. The second name is due to a stalagmite which has the form of a priest. Finally, it is also called the cave of Pausanias because it is said that the archaeologists, digging at the entrance, discovered the statue of Pausanias, king of Sparta.
