Georgios N. Petrolekas Foundation
The Georgios N. Petrolekas Foundation derives income from the rental of business premises, offices and shops, which make up the multi-storey building it owns in Piraeus at the junction of Iakovos Dragatsis and Iroon Polytechniou streets. The Foundation's charitable purpose lies in providing assistance, mainly on Christmas and Easter days, as well as during other days of the year, to the residents of the Charakas Community.
Benefactor Georgios N. Petrolekas was born in 1855 in the village of Charakas in Laconia and died on May 19th, 1928. With a rich commercial activity in America, in 1892, he founded in Piraeus, together with his cousin, Georgios Drivas, the company "LEKAS & DRIVAS” (“Lekas and Drivas Import/Export Company”). With his will, he left various sums to institutions in Piraeus and relatives, as well as the sum of 1,000,000 drachmas to the Community of Charakas. Finally, he left the aforementioned multi-storey building for exploitation to provide financial assistance to the residents of his hometown.
