Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, known to the locals as "Panagia", is located at the northeastern end of the village of Caryes.
The temple was built in 1900. According to historians, in antiquity, the sanctuary of Artemis was located at the site. In fact, the recent maintenance of the temple highlighted parts of the ancient temple.
Inside the courtyard of the church there are four plane trees, known as the "century - old plane trees of Menelaus". According to traveler Pausanias, the trees were planted by Menelaus around 1100 BC.
Also, to the left of the entrance of the courtyard of the church, there is a spring called the "source of Virgin Mary". The point where the spring waters gush is located, almost, below the temple.
