An excursion to the endless green of Karyes

On the western slopes of Mount Parnon, the village has stood since ancient times at an altitude of 950 metres. It is located on the site of the homonymous ancient settlement to which the Caryatids of Erechtheion owe their name. In Karyes, it is said that the king of Sparta, Menelaus, gathered his army before leaving for Troy.

From the historic village, participants will visit the Caryatid monument, inaugurated in 1983. It is a replica of the part of the ancient Erechtheion temple on the Acropolis of Athens. The Community clock stands out in a privileged position from which the visitor can enjoy a panoramic view of almost the entire village, the foothills of Parnon and the volume of Mount Taygetos.

At the Reveli stream, the greenery begins to surround the landscape, and a short ascend follows. At a lower altitude, one can see the towering plane trees, which then change into a beautiful oak forest. Very soon, old and colossal chestnut trees appear, which begin to multiply.

Continuing, the landscape changes in the direction of the Agiorgis stream. The path is well maintained and quickly takes the form of a jungle from nature that has conquered the Derezis massif. Soon, the point appears where nature, as a great sculptor, forms a small waterfall with all the accompanying fauna, such as frogs, green moss, climbing plants, plane trees and beeches.
