The mountain village of Vresthena is located at an altitude of 800 meters and is 30 km from Sparta. It is built amphitheatrically on a hill at the foothills of Mount Parnon.
North of Vresthena there is an ancient quarry from which the ancient Spartans made their white marble monuments. West of the village, at Paliogoulas location, you can find the ruins of ancient Sellasia with many archaeological findings.
After the liberation from the Turks, Vresthena acquired, in the early 1860s, a "Greek" school, thanks to the contribution of the wealthy expatriate Nikolaos Pilalas.
