Gerakas Lagoon
Gerakas lagoon is located in the small village of Gerakas, 22 km north of Monemvasia. It has an area of 400 acres and a narrow entrance from the sea, like a fjord. The lagoon plants have a reddish hue, giving the impression that the lagoon is red.
The area remains a safe anchorage for ships to this day, while it also stands out for its rich ecosystem. It is the only fjord in Greece and it is an important gathering place for migratory birds. In particular, it is one of the last refuges of herons, as well as other rare birds. For this reason, Gerakas lagoon is protected by the NATURA 2000 network.
