Koulentianos Tower
Koulentianos Tower is located on the small Koulenti Cape, southeast of Platanisto, next to Saint Elishaios of Pantanassa. From the location where it is built, it supervises the area from Elafonissos and the Vatican gulf up to Mani.
Today, unfortunately, it is half-ruined. According to its construction and morphological features (rifles etc.), the tower probably dates back to the Second Venetian Rule (1690-1715). Koulentianos Tower was part of a network used to inform people of pirate raids. More specifically, it is one of the towers, along with the "Fonias" one, and the castle of Agia Paraskevi, which belonged to an ancient communication system. When the observer on the tower saw pirates in the sea, he set fire to dry twigs on the roof terrace and then abandoned it. The observer of the next tower did the same, so the locals had the time to take appropriate measures.
Tradition links the tower with the Byzantine princess, Irene, daughter of Andronicus Paleologos, who allegedly lived there. Finally, access to Koulentianos Tower is of medium difficulty and is done via a 300-metre dirt road and path.
