Saint Athanasios Temple
Quite close to Kryovrysi, the Byzantine church of Agios Athanasios stands out, located between the villages of Kryovrysi and Pantanassa.
The three-aisled church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Agios Athanasios and Agios Spyridonas, but "Agios Athanasios" has prevailed as a place name. It is a unique type of five-domed, octagonal temple. Next to the church is the village cemetery, which owes its name to the church.
The church was built in the middle of the 14th century by the (illegitimate) daughter of Andronikos III Palaiologos, Irene Paleologina. However, according to Anastasios Orlandos, the 12th century is considered an acceptable time for the construction time of the temple.
