Anakolos Gorge at Xirokabi
Near kefalochori (the biggest village in the area), Xirokabi is Anakolos gorge, ideal for hiking enthusiasts. It is an area of exceptional natural beauty with impressive rock formations and abundant running waters. It is the only gorge in Greece that one can cross by (conventional) car, and its entrance is hidden behind the outdoor amphitheatre of the area.
It is also called the "Taygetos Gorge" and is part of the Natura 2000 network due to the fact that it hosts around twenty species of vegetation that do not exist anywhere else in the world.
Three marked paths lead to the Monastery of Gola, the mountain refuge of Taygetos, the forest area of Pentavla and the springs of the Rasina stream with its waterfalls and lakes that are ideal for swimming. Specifically, along the way, one can find 67 springs.
