Lake Vivari
The small lake Vivari is about 12 km from Skala. It is a small strip of brackish water seasonally connected to the sea. Vivari belongs to the more expansive Delta of Evrotas and is located east of the large beach created by the river in the Laconic Gulf. Due to its geographical location, the lake is home to many birds, while the area’s vegetation consists of straw, reeds and tamarisk trees. In particular, it is one of the southernmost wetlands in the country before the migration to Africa.
The word "vivari" refers to a fish farm and comes from the Latin word "vivarium". In fact, there are reports that during the Turkish occupation, every August, in the area, many residents gathered to fish after having paid the owner of the site.
