The village of Myrtia (or Myrtea or Mourtia) belongs administratively to the Municipality of Evrotas. It is located 50 kilometres northwest of Sparta and has 550 permanent residents. According to local tradition, the village's name comes from the myrtle bushes that thrived in the area. Before the Revolution of 1821, it belonged to the settlement of Geraki with its few scattered houses. Due to the village's location, there was also an inn for those who went from Geraki to the south or vice versa.
At the village entrance, visitors can see the church of Agioi Theodoroi, which was built with ancient building materials, taken, probably, from the ancient Asklepion of Eleatis Asklepios.
