The traditional, preserved village of Paliros (or Palyros) is located just before Cape Tainaro. It is built at an altitude of 150 metres and has just 32 permanent residents. The port of Paliro is Porto Cayo.
Between Paliro Bay and Cape Tainaro, you can find Asomaton (or Sternes) Cove. There, visitors can see the small church of Agioi Asomaton (Taxiarches). The church is 2 km away from the village and was built with materials taken entirely from the ancient temple of Poseidon, which was located in the same place. Also, near the shore, where visitors can enjoy their swim, carved rocks remind us of an ancient group of seats (synthrono) with many carved cavities. There is a cave carved by human hands very close to the spot. There, probably, was the ancient sanctuary and temple of Poseidon and a giant statue of the god. Pausanias also mention this cave in his Tours ("Lakonika", 25). According to ancient traditions, there also stood the statue of Cerberus that Hercules had pulled from Hades.
Visitors can relax in the cobbled alleys where the old and the new stone houses coexist harmoniously in the village with the wild beauty. Finally, if you happen to be in the village, the church of Agia Triada with the remarkable frescoes is worth visiting.
