Kyparissos is a small seaside village built near the site of ancient Kenipolis. The village is located near Cape Tainaro and Gerolimenas and, today, has been named by the many cypress trees (Kyparissia) that existed in the area. According to Pausanias, the area was initially called Tainaros and later Kenipolis. It was the most important city of the "Eleutherolakonians", built by the Tainarians, for which it was formerly called Tainaros.
The village is built around two small bays. One is a fishing port, and the other is a pebble beach. In Kyparissos, visitors can enjoy their swim at the two beautiful pebbly beaches, located just after the archaeological site of ancient Kenipolis. Some ruins of the wall and the sanctuary of the ancient city are preserved near the village. Finally, visitors can see some churches in the area, some of which have been built on the site of ancient Greek temples and, in fact, with their materials.
