Pellana is located at the foothills of Taygetos, at an altitude of 400 metres, and is 24 km from Sparta. Very close to the village you can find the archaeological site of ancient Pellana. Numerous archaeological findings, shells, coins, architectural items and more are constantly being discovered in the area. With its fertile plain and many bodies of water, the village was formerly called Georgitsian Kalyvia and since 1912, Kalyvia. In 1932, the village took its contemporary name.
In Pellana, visitors can walk in the village streets or enjoy their coffee in the café -taverns of the traditional central square with the big plane tree. There, there are two characteristic buildings, each with its own story. The imposing Gouzoulis Tower is located in the centre of the village and is over 200 years old. It belongs to the well-known family of landowners who come from Georgitsi. In the southeast corner of the tower, there is a cylindrical protruding ledge with crenels, which strongly resembles the towers of Mani. The second building, located at the White Fountain, is the Tower of Rassia - an old mansion with the unique architectural character of the area. It is said that its foundations, due to many underground waters, lie on logs (thick trunks of special wood that do not rot).
Finally, the emancipation of Pellana's women is remarkable. Unlike the women of the neighbouring villages, Pellaniotisses (Pellana women) have long occupied a high position in the family hierarchy.
