Penelopean Road
The "Penelopean Road" (in honour of Penelope and Odysseus) is held within the framework of the "Hyacinthia" institution, which started in 2017 and has since been organised every summer at the "Mnemosyne Lacedaemonian Cultural Centre " and the Spantidos amphitheatre, where it takes place.
It is the 11 km Royal Road Race organised by the, as mentioned earlier, Cultural Centre with the support of the "Spartan Runners" and Dimopoulos Coaching. The circular road race is held in Georgitsi, where the amphitheatre is located (start and finish), while at the same time, there is also a 2 km children's race.
According to legend, the first road race with a royal seal (before even the Olympic Games) was organised in the area of today's Pellana, in 1300-1200 BC, by King Ikarius, in honour of his beloved daughter Penelope (first cousin of Fair Helen). The winner of the royal race was Odysseus, who then married her.
