Agoriani is a picturesque, semi-mountainous village with plenty of spring waters and lush vegetation, built at an altitude of 750 metres. It is one of the villages of Epano Riza of Taygetos and is only 34 km away from Sparta (which is the municipality it belongs to). Near the village, you can find the archaeological site of Pellana. In the village, there are twelve churches. At the same time, visitors can wander the traditional alleys with the stone terraces, the cobbled path of Stavrogiannakas and the houses with the characteristic architecture of the villages of Epano Riza. Here you can also find "Paliogiophyro" (old bridge), which dates back to 1910.
There are various speculations about the origin of the name of the village. According to Father Dimitrios, the name comes from the Slavic word "Agorianje", which means "rocky place". Others believe it comes from the words "market" ("gathering of people for consultation"), and "ani" ("upstream"). The word "agori" comes from the verb "ageiro", which means "gather" and the word "ani" from the verb "anyo", which means "I perform, I reach the end of the journey".
Every year, on August 16th, the Cultural Association of the village organises the big, traditional festival of Panagia, where many people from all over the Peloponnese gather. The festival takes place at Alonia Square.
