Eleni Anaeiponyfi – Fighter of 1821
Maniatissa (from Mani) Eleni Aneiponyfi acted in 1826 when Ibrahim Pasha landed in Mani. During the battle of Polyaravos (August 28th, 1826) in the village of Polyaravos, she was chased by an Egyptian soldier, and with her two children, she ran to save herself. However, her belt came undone, and he grabbed her by one end. The woman suddenly let the belt come off, and when the soldier fell to the ground, she killed him by stabbing him. Today, in the dome of the village fountain, where the event took place, visitors can see the commemorative plaque.
In the 20th century, the figure of Eleni Anaeiponyfi was the emblem of the Municipality of Malevri in Laconia. In her person, the Poly-Arab woman was honoured and, by extension, all Mani women.
