Archontiko is built at an altitude of 150 metres and is only 8 kilometres from Gythio. Today, it has about seventy inhabitants. It seems to have taken its name from the mansion (archontiko) of the Grigorakis family, as well as from a tower house that exists to this day.
The village belongs to the Bardounochoria of Mani and is amphitheatrically built in an olive grove on a slope. Historically, it is mentioned in various Venetian documents of 1703-1705 as Archontiko villa and Archontico. It is also mentioned in the poem of Nikitas Nifakis in 1790 as Archontikon.
