Melitini is located between Gythio and Sparta at the foothills of Taygetos. It is built at an altitude of 360 metres and has about 130 permanent residents. It is one of the Turkish villages of the area called Tourkobardounochoria. The oldest name of the village, until 1930, was Zelina that, in Slavic, means "green".
The village's main church is Agia Varvara, with the characteristic stone bell tower dating back to 1910. It is a church dedicated to two saints, in memory of Agia Varvara (celebrates on December 4th) and the Savior – Sotiras (August 4th). On a hill, before entering the village, visitors can see the cemetery church of Agia Irene.
In Melitini, visitors can see the two springs with the crystal-clear waters and the first school office of the area, which seems to have been founded by the fighter of 1821, Panagiotakis Giatrakos. The school was first opened in 1843 and is located close to the church of St. Barbara. Today, it has been renovated and operates as a Folklore Museum. Finally, the facilities of the old disinfestation plant of SYKIKI (Central Cooperative Union of Figs and Nuts), at the village entrance, are also of interest.
