The village of Paleovrysi is one of the northernmost villages of northern Mani, also known as Bardounochoria. The village is 44 km from Sparta and 22 km from Gythio. It is built at an altitude of 480 metres and has about 75 permanent residents. During the Turkish occupation, the village was called Pritsa by the Slavs.
At Paliovrysi, there were many cisterns that dated back to the Byzantine era. Today, unfortunately, few remains are preserved. However, what visitors can see in the area are the many natural springs, mainly the Maggania spring, which is located in a beautiful environment with many plane trees. In the village, there are many churches, such as the church of Agios Nikolaos, next to the cemetery. Just outside the village, you can find the chapel of Agios Georgios (Saint George), and at the top of the hill of Profitis Ilias, the homonymous church dominates.
Finally, every year, on the first Saturday after the 15th of August, a large traditional festival is organised at Paleovrysi with food, wine and live music.
