The village of Petrina is the largest in the Municipality of Smynos and is located 35 km south of Sparta. It is built at an altitude of 220 metres on the eastern slopes of Taygetos. Along the road from Petrina to Lemonia, visitors can see the Kolopana stream.
In the large square of the village, the visitor can see the church of Saints (Apostles) Pavlos and Petros with the stone bell tower. The church was built in 1900, while the clock tower was built in 1951 and was donated by expatriates. On June 29th, a festival with plenty of wine, food and live music takes place at the site.
Petrina is known for its excellent olive oil, which has acquired a local designation of origin. Visitors here can visit the facilities of the historic Agricultural Cooperative Association. The Association was founded in 1915 and is one of the first in Greece. Its history began in 1907 when the idea inspired teacher Stylianos K. Koutoupis. In fact, in 1938, the Cooperative was the first to apply the system of standard pressing of the olive fruit only a few hours after its collection.
Since 2010, every August, the celebration of traditional products, "The village basket", takes place at the village square. The women of Petrina undertake the part of tradition and culture through their Association, "Estia". The exhibition includes local products such as olive oil, noodles, trachanas (traditional Greek food) etc.
