The Archaeological Collection - Monemvasia
The Archaeological Collection, inaugurated in 1999, is housed in an old mosque opposite the town cathedral of Elkomenos Christos.
After the Liberation, the building was used as a prison and a café. The findings, mainly discovered during rescue excavations and surface surveys, are architectural sculptures and ceramic objects of daily usage. The statues coming from the church of Agia Sofia and the ruined Mid-Byzantine church excavated at the Georgoulas grounds date back to the end of the 12th century.
The ceramic objects date back to the Early Christian period until the later years of the Turkish Occupation.
The permanent exhibition aims to provide evidence for public life (through the thematic section of sculptures) as well as for private or individual life (through the thematic selection of ceramics and small crafts). Bilingual explanatory texts accompany all exhibits in the collection. The suggested route for visitors starts from the northern interior face of the building with a group of outdoor sculptures, coats of arms (such as the relief with the Venetian lion of 1525) and sculptures.
