The shipwreck "Dimitrios" of Gythio
The shipwreck "Dimitrios" has been stranded on the beach of Glyfada, just 5 kilometres from Gythio, for many years.
According to residents, the 67-meter-long vessel "Dimitrios" (formerly "Klintholm") was abandoned by its owners (Mollaris and Matsinos brothers) mainly because of financial problems. Specifically, the ship sailed off to Gythio on December 4th, 1980, due to the captain's illness. Until 9 November 1981, there was no response from the shipowners despite port authorities' notifications. Thus, the ship was left unprotected from bad weather conditions and eventually drifted off its anchorage.
Glyfada Beach, an absolute tourist attraction, became its final destination. The area where the wreck is found is called Baltaki.
