Sanctuary of Zeus Kappotas
Zeus Kappotas' Sanctuary is located at Vasileos Pavlou Street in Gythio. It is a carved stone that, according to legend, fell from the sky and healed Orestes from the mania that had come upon him when he sat on it. In Roman times they believed that it was Zeus, who in the form of a stone healed the pains.
The adjective "Kappottas" belongs to the Doric dialect (Pafsanias 3,22,1). It comes from the words "kata (against)" and "pavo (cease)" (or "against" and "fall") and is related to meteorological phenomena.
