Roman Baths in Gythio
Gythion Roman Baths (public baths) clearly preserve the three essential elements of the space: a small rectangular space with a square notch for a water tank for cold baths, a circular area with an intermediate cavity for bronze boilers and warm baths and a room with warm baths, the "thermon".
The word "balanion" comes from the root of the verb "balanevo" and describes the art of bathing. Even Hippocrates, who is considered the father of spa therapy, devotes a whole chapter in his work, " As far as airs, places and waters are concerned".
