The Church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa
The white, small church of Panagia Chrysafitissa is located in the Lower Town of Monemvasia, in the centre of the large square. It is an octagonal domed temple built during the First Ottoman Empire and dated back to the 17th century. The church’s foundation is connected with the migration of the icon of the Virgin Mary from Chrysafa of Lacedaemon. The miraculous icon was found in the well by an older woman on the south side of the temple where the chapel of the Evresis was built.
The temple is small in dimensions and is housed in a structure with a low dome supported by eight cantilevers. It celebrates the day after St. Thomas's Sunday, where a litany of the icon of Panagia Chrysafitissa takes place on the cobblestone streets of Castle City. Finally, a building facility (known as "Kellia") which originally belonged to a monastic complex and has been converted into a traditional guest house, extends north of the church.
