Kotronas is a seaside, picturesque settlement, a model of traditional Mani architecture, built on the bottom endpoints of Taygetos. It is the perfect base to discover the magic of Mani, as it is 87 kilometres from Sparta, 25 kilometres from Gythio and only 16 kilometres from Areopolis. The village has about 300 permanent residents, and bigger or smaller boats are tied to its small moor.
If you happen to be at Kotronas, do not forget to visit the church of Agios Charalambos, located in the centre of the village and the church of Ypapanti Christos, with its remarkable frescoes, along the road that crosses the village. Also noteworthy is the newly established Cultural Centre, quite close to the small harbour and the bronze statue of the Macedonian hero Nikiforos Demestichas (1882-1960), known as Captain Nikiforos.
Kotronas is connected to the Skopas island by a narrow strip of land 300 metres long. Here lies the ancient city of Tethronis, which belonged to the Eleftherolakonian community. On the islet, you will see ancient relics and the church of Agios Nikolaos.
