Sklavounakos Tower
The walled complex of chief Sklavounakos is located south of Pyrgos, Diros, in the Petrolakkos area. It is one of the tallest towers in Mani and one of the best-preserved. During the Revolution of 1821, it was used for the defence needs of the inhabitants.
The Sklavounakos' tower complex belonged and defended the whole family and all the relatives who lived in nearby houses. The complex includes a six-storey tower, carved stone troughs (tanks), a family church with a cemetery and a paddock for the animals. The precinct, 5 metres high, has a corridor with loopholes, a war cage in the southwest corner, and an arched gate above where there is a scaffold. There is a large house on the north side of the fort with two rooms on the ground and three rooms on the first floor. The house has its own 'liako' (closed balcony overlooking the sun) and a carved tank, while to the south, there is the walled courtyard. The six-storey war tower stands 25 metres high on the east side of the enclosure. It was built in 1812 and oversaw the entire area. In fact, on the west side of the tower, there is a carved stone that indicates the date of construction of the building. It has numerous openings for rifles and a few small arched windows for defensive purposes. Finally, on the side of some windows, some slabs supported stone warriors and loopholes in times of war.
