The small settlement of Spira is located 2 km from Kokkala, on the road to Tainaro. The settlement is built at an altitude of 111 metres and has only 14 permanent residents. It is also known as Panagia and was made by Melianos. All the houses in the settlement are made of stone, thus preserving the area's traditional architecture.
The towers of the Melados family and the tower complex of the Melas – Georgakogiannis families of 1780 stand at the top of the hill. In the area, visitors can also see a circular war tower and remnants of fortifications. At the "Kastelarika" location, a cannon dominates the area arrogantly, while in the centre of the settlement, we find the "Giourousi" square, dedicated to Grigoris Melas.
There is also the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in the settlement, which celebrates on September 8th. The church is maintained by the Melas family and its descendants, one of the most prominent families in Mani. St. Stratigos, the small cemetery of the settlement, can also be found in Spira.
Finally, there have been long-standing relations between Spira and Elafonissos since the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the similarities between the ceramics of Spira, which were found on the west side of the hill, and Prehistoric Elafonisos.
