The small mountainous, traditional settlement Pachianika is built at an altitude of 320 metres and has 207 permanent inhabitants. The settlement consists of Pano and Kato Pachianika of Agios Nikolas. From Pachianika, a dirt road (about 3 km long) begins in the east of the Liakos hillside. This dirt road ends at the burial monument and the marble bust of poet and writer Ioannis Barbayiannis (1925-1992).
Around 1700, the Mourkakos family settled in the village of Pachianika, expelling the Barbagiannis family who lived in Agios Nikolas. There, the family built a multi-storey tower, consolidating its power in this way. In fact, it is said that, until recently, the Mourkakos' Tower had a large cannon, which was stolen by someone when the road to Pano Pachianika was opened. In the same area, visitors can see both family churches. The contribution and strength of the Mourkakos family were also "found" in the Liberation Struggle of 1821 when at least seven members of the Mourkakos family took part and were honoured with commendations of bravery. In 1912-1913, the family played an active role in the Balkan Wars, while in 1950, many of its members followed the migration wave to urban centres and abroad. Finally, it is worth mentioning that Nikos Mourkakos, a former lyricist of folk songs, also comes from this family.
