Mesisklis Tower
In the settlement of Nomia, which is only 5 km from Monemvasia, there is the oldest tower in Mani that belonged in the Mesisklis family. The Tower is a dominant structure in the center of Nomia, opposite the church of Taxiarches. We do not know the exact date of construction of the Tower of Mesisklis, but it is possible that it was built in the late 17th to early 18th century. The most famous of the owners of the Tower was Mesisklis, one of Otto’s Captains, who disagreed with his commander’s order to demolish the towers of Mani - an order which, in the end, was not carried out.
The Tower is 9 meters high and is surrounded by other houses of the Mesisklis family for security reasons. The communication between them was done through narrow stairs and corridors for an even more difficult approach to the main volume of the Tower. The windows are almost non-existent. The only openings are small holes in the walls for the rifles. These rifle holes are located all over the Tower, mainly on the top floor. A special feature of the Tower is the corner loop towards the side of the road, which enabled the defender to control both external sides of the Tower. Finally, the Tower has a number of storage spaces for food supplies and a cistern at its base which covered any water needs.
