Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary
The Byzantine church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located at the "Stou Korakis" location, at the village of Mina, which is 71 km from Sparta and 20 km from Areopolis. The monument, (which is built of rough stones, without the use of binder), presents serious static and structural problems. Extensive dismantling of masonry resulted in the destruction of most of the painting decoration which dated back to the last years of the 13th century. In order to save the murals, part of the walls was removed and transferred to the Ephorate's maintenance laboratory in Geraki. Today, a mural depicting the Assumption of Virgin Mary is on display at the Pikoulakis Tower Museum in Areopolis.
