Agios Dimitrios Church
The church of Agios Dimitrios is located at a lower altitude than the Frankish castle of the small village of Bordonia, which is built at the foothills of Taygetos and is 15 km from Sparta. It is the oldest church in the area and was built around 1712. Today only the ruins of the church survive.
During the Turkish Occupation, it was a stronghold of the fighters and served as a cemetery. The bones of the warriors are kept in an ossuary near the temple. The church had handmade icons of 1700, as well as murals. Unfortunately, in 1870, after the demolition of the temple, the frescoes were destroyed. In 1972, by the decision of George Chene and the inhabitants of Bordonia, the church was rebuilt elsewhere, north of St. George’s church and the icons of the old church were moved there.
