Temple of Zoodochos Pigi
The Byzantine church of Zoodochos Pigi is located near the square of Magoula, which is just 2 km from Sparta. The old Cathedral was originally a catholic monastery. Its architectural type combines the three – aisled, vaulted basilica and the cruciform inscribed church with an octagonal dome. Today, at a higher level than the old church, one can see the new parish church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary.
Inside the church, two layers of painted decoration of the 17th and 18th century are preserved in fragments. From an engraved inscription on one of the columns we learn the name of the builder Georgilas Vazos (Avazos), from Paros. On the east side, inside, three semicircular arches are formed, while to the northeast, a cavernous space opens that preserves a mural and communicates with the sacred Step through an opening with a pointed end. An engraving, which is preserved on the outside of the drum of the south antenna of the cross, is related to the building history of the monument (1763).
