The traditional village of Trypi is located just 6 km from Mystras Castle and 9 km from Sparta, in the direction of Kalamata. The town is built amphitheatrically at the fridges of the mountain, at an altitude of 640 metres. According to tradition, its name is because it is a passageway to the neighbouring prefecture of Messinia. Others believe it was named after the hole in the Kaiadas Cave. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it was an important commercial and intellectual centre of the region due to its privileged geographical location.
Here, visitors can enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Karvasaras and Vassiloneri springs, while the river Knakion is at a distance of five minutes from the main road. Every year, in September, a big festival takes place at the springs of the river, on the occasion of the celebration of the church of Agios Ioannis, with dances and songs. There are, in total, seventeen churches at the village, of which the Byzantine Church of Agios Theodoros, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and the ruined monastery of Agios Ioannis the Baptist (which is built in the verdant environment) stand out.
