Pantanassa Abbey
The abbey, the church of which is the best-preserved monument in Mystras. The wall paintings on the floor and the chancel date back to around 1430, while those on the ground floor are from the 18th century. The abbey was founded by Ioannis Fragopoulos.
The church is the building of Mystras with the strongest western influences. Among the sculptures, the capitals and the gate leading from the narthex to the church are standing out. The monument bears strong Gothic elements, mainly on the west side and the bell tower, in the context of close relations with the West.
It is the only abbey - monastery in the archaeological site that is still permanently inhabited by nuns who provide accommodation to pilgrims.
