Agia Sofia Church
The church of Agia Sophia is located on the northern slope of the castle-state of Mystras, a short distance from the upper gate of the fortress and the Palace of Mystras (also known as the Palace of the Despots). The church is an inscribed cruciform church with a dome and a prominent spire. The temple, in its greater part, has been built according to the brick-enclosed system and has rich ceramic decoration on the drums of the antennae of the cross.
It was built between 1350 and 1365 by the first despot of Mystras and probably constituted the church of the Palaces. Many members of the ruling class of Mystras have been buried here.
A 15th-century silk dress that belonged to a lady was found in a tomb of the northern gallery and today can be seen at the Mystras Museum. During the Turkish Occupation, Agia Sofia was converted into a mosque.
