Gerolimenas is a picturesque, seaside village with a small natural harbour. It is built at an altitude of 8 metres, at the south end of Mani and is 49 kilometres from Gythio and 95 kilometres from Sparta. The settlement's name was probably given to it because it was considered a sacred harbour, while in the former dialect of Mani, it was referred to as Limenas.
During the Turkish occupation, Gerolimenas was one of the bases of the pirates of Mani. In contrast, during the late Turkish occupation, it was used by the Mandouvalos family as a local trading centre. Gerolimenas was also a vital fishing sanctuary with ice-making facilities with fish and seafood shops as it was also a port accessible to sponge boats.
