Roman shipwreck at Limeni
Opposite the north side of the Mavromichalis' statue (at the church of Agios Sostis at Limeni), about 30 metres from the land, there is a large Roman shipwreck of the 1st century BC., which could become Mani's most famous archaeological site. It is only 4.5 meters deep and descends on a slope to a depth of 21 metres. Even from the surface of the sea, the volume of fragments of amphorae is visible.
In 1977, an identifying survey of the wreck was conducted by archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas. The area of the wreckage is approximately 150 sq. m. The cargo consists mainly of amphorae, and the shipwreck has, unfortunately, been robbed of anything valuable. Also, the shipwreck is of the same period and the same size as the Antikythera ship. It is a unique submarine exhibit that is awaiting its emergence.
