The village of Sotiras, (or Kouskouni), is just 4 km from Areopolis. It is built at an altitude of 365 meters and has about 52 permanent residents. The village is recognized as a traditional settlement that still preserves the special architecture of Mani. During the Ottoman rule, the village maintained a special tax regime, while it was also the homeland of the Mavromichalis family.
In the village, the visitor has the chance to wander along the stone-built alleys and visit the church of Panagia with its exquisite frescoes. The church dates back to 1189 and is owned by the Chrysikakis family. To this day, it is preserved and maintained by the family itself. The church of the Transfiguration of the Savior (1717) at the village square is, also, of interest.
