The village of Pyrgos, Diros, is located 78 km south of Sparta. It is built at an altitude of 194 metres and has about 270 permanent residents. Just outside the village, at a distance of 4 km, visitors can see the unique Vlychada or Glyfada cave, as well as the Alepotrypa and Katafygi caves. The visitor can find traditional accommodation in hotels, hostels and apartments, cafes and restaurants for excellent food and entertainment in the village. Historian Antonis Xepapadakos was born in Pyrgos Diros and came from a historical family. Byzantine nobleman Nikandros was one of his ancestors (1262)
The name of the place was mentioned in the Medieval years. At the same time, in the summer of 1826, at Pyrgos, Diros, the repulse of the Egyptian forces of Ibrahim Pasha on the beach of Diros by the Maniatisses (Mani women) and the Maniates (Mani men) took place. Every year the anniversary of the Battle of Diros is celebrated at the village, paying tribute to the Mani women of the area, who resisted and fought the troops of Ibrahim Pasha on their own.
