The mountain village of Vachos is built at an altitude of 275 metres and has about 190 permanent residents. It is just 7 km from Areopolis and 2 km from Stavros. It is considered the most beautiful village of Mani by many people.
Visitors here can wander the alleys with the traditional houses and admire the village's natural beauty with the dense forest all around. The new buildings are built with traditional architectural principles, so the result is uniform and harmonious. The village is known for its many springs, so it has its own drinking water. The village's main church is that of Panagia. At Skala Vachos, you can find the small Monastery of Panagitsa (dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary) of the 17th century. The church is in good condition, but the other buildings are in ruins.
Every August, the Vachos Association organises a big festival in the village's central square with live music, good food, and plenty of wine. Finally, Vachos is well known for its vineyards. That is why when you are in the village do not forget to try some of its fine wines.
