Monastery of Panagia Evretria (Bretis)
The Panagia Evretria Monastery (Bretis), is to the north of Limeni. The name is also known in other churches of Greece, usually in cases where the icon of the Virgin Mary was found by a believer. What has remained is the half-destroyed Catholic crucifix roof temple with frescoes dating back to the 18th century. The abandoned Monastery, which belongs to the Mavromichalis family, maintains the ‘diavatiko’, the tower and various other auxiliary buildings. The ‘catholicon’ dates back to 1731. There are two marble pillars at the base of the bell tower, which rises above the west side. Also, the relief surface is divided into squares decorated with crosses, thorns and leaves.
The church of the Virgin Mary of Evretria, which is included in the monastery, has been sold to the Benaki Museum by Ioannis Sabatakakis. Still, the restoration has not yet begun, with the result that the monument is in danger.
