The Cultural Centre of Sparta commemorates this year the execution of the 118 Spartans in Monodendri, presenting a program of events that will run until mid-December. Focusing on memory, historical truth and public reflection, the actions illuminate one of the most dramatic moments in local and national history.
Book presentation by Menelaos Charalambides
On Wednesday, November 26th, at 7 pm, in the “George Perdiclonis” room of the Cultural Centre, there will be a presentation of the new book by historian and author Menelaos Charalambides entitled “The Collaborationists, Armed, political and economic cooperation during the years of the Occupation”.
The author will be in Sparta for an evening of discussion and acquaintance, conveying his research on a topic that continues to arouse emotion and intense interest, while at the same time requiring a deeper historical understanding. The event is part of the memory program for the 118 and is held against the backdrop of their historical anniversary.
“Memory Exhibition for the 118”
During the same period, in the “Alexandros Kouris” exhibition hall, the Memory Exhibition for the 118 is operating, which will remain open until December 11th.
Through archival material, documents and photographs, the exhibition presents the path to the mass execution of the 118 Spartans in December 1943 in Monodendri. Its goal is historical documentation and, at the same time, the preservation of the collective memory of the events that marked Laconia and the country.
The exhibition is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 to 9 pm. It is also possible to visit by appointment by calling 6932 290 451. Admission is free for everyone.
