The mountain village of Taygeti (formerly Barsinikos) is located on the eastern slope of Taygetos and has 17 permanent residents. It is built at an altitude of 700 metres and administratively belongs to the municipality of Mystras. The village is only 5 km from Mystras. The name Varsinikos (which has reached our days with the variation of the original "v" to "b" - Barsinikos) comes from the Slavic word "vrsnik", which means "hill" and "top". The oldest indication of a Barsinikan settlement is in the census of the population of the Peloponnese in 1700, which was carried out on behalf of the Venetian authorities.
For hiking lovers, there is a passable path (cobbled path), 2.5 km long, which starts from the village of Mystras and ends at Taygeti.
Every year in Taygeti, on July 21st, a festival is held in the courtyard of the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi. The festival is organised by the Progressive Association of Taygeti (Barsinikos), where a large crowd gathers to enjoy good food, wine and traditional music.
