Museum of Modern Sparta
The Museum of Modern Sparta was established by the Municipality of Sparta and the Cultural Centre of Sparta. It is housed on the first floor of the neoclassical building of the town's Cultural Centre. The exhibition at the museum begins with references to the Filiki Eteria ("Society of Friends"), the Greek Revolution of 1821 and to Mystras families, who later on became the first settlers of Sparta. Next, the visitor can see the Othonas' Decree, which dates back to 1834. The exhibition presents the most important landmarks during the urban, cultural and residential development of Sparta.
In the entryway, there are photos and information of several cities bearing the name of Sparta. A separate section is dedicated to Spartan newspaper advertisements from 1880 to the mid-20th century, where aspects of the economic and social life of the city are revived. Finally, there are pieces of furniture, local clothing items and other exhibits through which the visitor may have a complete picture of the history of Modern Sparta.
