The village of Magoula is just 2 km from Sparta and is built at an altitude of 240 meters. Due to the residential development of the area, it has now been united with the city of Sparta. The village is crossed by the small river Magoulitsa (Knakionas) and is located within walking distance from the area where the ancient High School "Platanista" was located. According to some, Magoula got its name from the Latin word "magus", which means something magical, of exceptional beauty.
At the village, the visitor can visit the Sainopouleio Amphitheater, an open space that cultural events are held. Sainopouleio has, in fact, been characterized as the most beautiful, newly built, theater in Greece. In Magoula the visitor can also find the Free School of Philosophy, "Plithon". It was founded in 1974 by academic Ioannis Theodorakopoulos, which has been offering philosophy courses, something that continues even today, being a modern center of intellectual pursuits.
Finally, at the Byzantine church of Zoodochos Pigi cemetery, the visitor can also see the Monument of the Fallen Soldiers, which was built in the mid - 1960s.
