Stoic Building ("Agora") in the Acropolis of Sparta
North of the Round Building, a monumental stoic structure, known as the "Agora", has been revealed.
The monument was excavated during the mid-’60s by Chrysanthos Christou. It is a large-scale arcade, the walls of which are made of large sandstones. The arcade dates back to the 4th or 3rd century B.C., while in the 2nd century B.C. underwent reconstruction.
In its inner corner, beneath a layer of destruction by intense burning, the figurative statue of the Empress Julia Aquilia Severa (220-222 A.D.), wife of Emperor Elagabalus, was found. The figure can be found in the National Archaeological Museum today.
