Museum of Ecclesiastical Art of the Holy Metropolis of Monemvasia & Sparta
Laconia's ecclesiastical monuments and precious relics are undoubtedly priceless treasures for the place. The exhibits of the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art come from all over the Metropolitan area. After several transportations, the relics were initially stored in the Holy Monastery of the Holy Forty Martyrs and then moved and maintained at the first museum site. The Museum of Ecclesiastical Art was founded in 1991 and was initially housed on the second floor of the new Bishopric. In 2014, construction work of the new Museum began on the first floor of a building adjacent to the Bishopric, which houses the Metropolitan Library and the local Church Radio Station on the ground floor.
At the Museum, visitors can admire portable images of various periods, trends and styles, and handwritten codes from monasteries in the area (such as the Monastery of the Holy Forty Martyrs and the Monastery of Zerbitsa). Exhibits also include fine examples of embroidery, ecclesiastical silverware, wood carvings, and an important collection of priestly items.
