The Manousakeio Museum of Folk and Urban Life
The Manousakeio Museum of Folk and Urban Life is a donation by the late Leonidas Meletiou Manousakis, who in 1996 donated his home with all its home appliances, his clothing and photographic records to the Municipality of Sparta. The Museum, entitled "Urban and Folk Life in Sparta in the 20th Century", is housed in a two-storey neoclassical building of the early 20th century, located at 13th Ananiou Street. The building has been designated a historic monument by the Ministry of Culture as a representative sample of the traditional architecture of the last century.
Through interior representations and media screenings, visitors have the opportunity to get a taste of the family and social life of the people who created and inhabited the new city of Sparta. They can also see furniture, clothing, embroidery and photographic material of the time.
A special place in the exhibition is occupied by the Ottoman banner, which was brought from Lesvos in 1912 by the Spartan Major Alexander Manousakis – uncle of the donor after the island was liberated from the Ottomans (8/11/1912). The Municipality now owns the banner since it was first maintained and designated a movable monument by the Ministry of Culture. Finally, in the Museum, the visitor can also see family relics of other Spartan citizens.
